Alternate (or Alternative) History is a sub-genre of speculative fiction that asks: “What if…?” Time travel is often used as a device, or the “Butterfly Effect,” in which a small change to an event’s trajectory leads to larger consequences. Re-imagining past events by supposing that a major event never occurred or ended differently is an appealing catalyst for writers since it provides a commonly known framework for the story.

For this month, I am focusing on alternate histories that address how the wider world might be affected by different historical circumstances. There are many other variations in this genre - ones that introduce magic or supernatural influences, or that rewrites a character’s personal journey.

"A heart-stoppingly dramatic new novel about a man who travels back in time to prevent the JFK assassination."

Boleyn KingThe Boleyn King - Laura Anderson

The Yiddish Policemen's UnionThe Yiddish Policemen's Union - Michael Chabon

"Jewish refugees and their descendants have prospered in a "temporary" safe haven in the wake of the Holocaust and the 1948 collapse of the state of Israel."

SS-GBSS-GB - Len Deighton

"The King is a hostage, the Queen and Princesses have fled, Churchill has been executed. and the SS is in charge of Scotland Yard. This shifting drama races toward its climax involving the fate of the King, and of England itself."

The Man in the High CastleThe Man in the High Castle - Philip K. Dick

The Years of Rice and SaltThe Years of Rice and Salt - Kim Stanley Robinson

"This is a look at the history that could have been: one that stretches across centuries, sees dynasties and nations rise and crumble, and spans horrible famine and magnificent innovation."

The Plot Against AmericaThe Plot Against America - Philip Roth

"Charles A. Lindbergh, heroic aviator and rabid isolationist, is elected President. He negotiates an "understanding" with Adolf Hitler, while the new government embarks on a program of folksy anti-Semitism."

Impossible HistoriesImpossible Histories - Hal Johnson

My favorite thing about this genre is how some basic knowledge is needed about how things actually occurred in order to appreciate how even a small alteration can result in exponential consequences. In this collection, Johnson provides detailed historical information with humor and a sharp appreciation for irony. He proposes different outcomes for a wide array of world events: from the arrival of the Vikings in North America to the Crusades to a potential thermonuclear war. The conversational tone makes this work of nonfiction fascinating, thought-provoking, and anything but stuffy.

So, who am I, anyway? I am a resident of West Groton, with a husband, four mostly-grown children, a fluffy Samoyed, and a kitten - all of which keep my vacuum well-employed. I am currently working part-time at the Groton Public Library and writing monthly reviews for Booklist Magazine. In a former life, I was a Director of PR/Marketing at a high-tech consulting firm. My BA is in Psychology, but most of my time was spent in college earning a Concentration in the Novel. That is all to say that I make no claims at being an expert of any kind, and my thoughts, opinions. and mistakes are solely my own. I am just a person whose passion for books has continued to grow from the moment I was first able to clutch and gnaw on them. I have been devouring them ever since.
