Picture it: A secluded, haunted mansion with a threatening presence (human or otherwise) waiting to ensnare the unsuspecting visitor who dares disturb its slumber. It might sound counterintuitive, but I always associate hot, sultry summer days with haunting, gothic novels dripping with atmosphere and simmering with growing menace. Gothic Literature has been around for a long time, oozing with florid prose, languid pacing, and nightmarish imagery.
For the sticky month of July, I invite you to delve into one of these Gothic gems that prove the potency of the genre and its ability to induce shivers even during the hottest season.

July Two-Minute Review
![]() | The Vanishing - Wendy Webb
Julia Bishop’s life is in ruins after fallout from her husband’s misdeeds and subsequent suicide. When a stranger appears at her door offering her a chance to escape the media frenzy, she gratefully takes him up on his unusual offer. Leaving all her belongings and identification behind, Julia goes to a secluded mansion near Lake Superior to act as a companion for the elderly Mrs. Sinclair. Are the strange sights and sounds she experiences at Havenwood due to medication withdrawal, or something more sinister? Why does she feel like she has been there before, and why does she feel like there is an ulterior motive for her invitation? A great example of the modern gothic genre, The Vanishing has all the requisite elements and themes, but none of the overwrought, emotive aspects that are often found in more classic examples. |

So, who am I, anyway? I am a resident of West Groton, with a husband, four mostly-grown children, a fluffy Samoyed, and a kitten - all of which keep my vacuum well-employed. I am currently working part-time at the Groton Public Library and writing monthly reviews for Booklist Magazine. In a former life, I was a Director of PR/Marketing at a high-tech consulting firm. My BA is in Psychology, but most of my time was spent in college earning a Concentration in the Novel. That is all to say that I make no claims at being an expert of any kind, and my thoughts, opinions. and mistakes are solely my own. I am just a person whose passion for books has continued to grow from the moment I was first able to clutch and gnaw on them. I have been devouring them ever since.
