• How to Use GPL's Databases

    What is a database?

Databases are curated collections of articles, facts, images or other information compiled and published by experts or professionals in a particular field. Although accessed online, they are not websites — libraries and other institutions subscribe to provide access to these materials. With a library card you have 24/7 access to the GPL's databases.

Why do I need databases when I have the Internet?

The Internet offers huge amounts of information but no guarantee that a site is accurate, complete or up-to-date. Library databases save you time while providing high quality information in a commercial-free environment. Because the information comes from reliable sources, databases are a great resource for school papers and homework.

How do I access the library's databases?

All databases can be accessed from public computers in the library. Most databases are provided to public libraries in state-wide subscriptions by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners — anywhere in Massachusetts, just click on the link and you're in. A few resources restrict remote (or at-home) access to MVLC cardholders or Groton patrons — they will require logging in with your library card when you are away from the library building.

Please contact the Reference Desk if you need assistance or have questions about using our databases. Email or call 978-448-8000.

Can't find what you're looking for in GPL's database?

All Massachusetts residents are eligible to use Electronic Resources at the Boston Public Library. You can apply online for a BPL eCard.
